Typography

The Record is set in three families. Spectral, a serif drawn for long reading on screens, carries the display sizes and the body text, in regular and medium weights with true italics. Archivo, a grotesk, is the meta voice: rubric labels, navigation, credit lines, and catalogue field labels, set small, uppercase, and letterspaced. Spline Sans Mono carries the catalogue data — record numbers such as WPG.07, date ranges, and the corrections log — so that the file's apparatus reads as apparatus. All three are self-hosted in woff2 and served from the site's own font directory.

Palette

Six colors, named for their jobs: a warm paper white ground (#FAF9F5); a near-black ink (#1B1A17); a muted grey-brown for captions and sources (#6E6A61); a hairline tone for the rules and frames that ledger the page (#DCD9D0); a plate grey behind images, the matted-print ground (#EFEDE7); and a single accent, a dry cadmium red (#9E2B1E), reserved for rubric labels, links, and record numbers.

Construction

The site is static HTML, hand-marked in semantic HTML5 — articles, figures with captions, dated time elements — with one stylesheet and no JavaScript. Each page renders entirely from its own markup; the contact form is a plain HTML form handled on the server. Layout is a 1200-pixel shell with article text in a centered 68-character column, images contained on their plate ground at native aspect ratio, and 1-pixel rules dividing the entries, on the model of a ledger.

Illustration

The hero images across the site are illustrations generated for the publication and captioned as such: flat, catalogue-plate drawings of the objects and spaces of the gallery world — matted prints, empty frames, flat files, packing crates — held to the site's own palette. Each carries the credit line "Illustration: The Wild Project Record" and a mono figure number. None depicts any artist's actual work, any person, or any recognisable place.

Image sourcing

Every image on the site ships with a caption and a credit line. The photographs discussed in the articles are described and cited in the prose and the sources blocks rather than reproduced. The site's imagery is the publication's own illustrations, drawn for these pages and credited as such on every plate. Rights holders and artists with credit or permission correspondence are invited to write via the contact form.
